Post it notes are ubiquitous. They are found in homes, offices and shops around the country, and are an essential item of stationery for many. They first hit our stationery cupboards in the 1980s, and it is difficult to imagine life without them now. Before post it notes, the only way to attach a note to something was to write on a standard piece of paper, and then find some other way of attaching it be that sticky tape, staple, paperclip or glue. The difficulty with all those methods is that they can cause damage to the thing they are being stuck to. Post it notes just made this all much easier, using a small amount of adhesive with a low level of stickiness , so as not to stick permanently or leave any mark.

Since their invention, many different types of post it notes have become available. A variety of different sizes, colours, shapes and markings can be found, although the most popular is still the original 3-inch square, yellow note that we all know and love. Perhaps the reason for their popularity is that they are the perfect size for writing a short note on, without having difficulty fitting on everything you wanted to say. The colour yellow is also an ideal one for post it notes, and presumably was chosen for that reason. It is pale enough that pens of pretty much any colour will easily show up on them and be readable. It is also a colour that immediately draws the attention, useful as post it notes are often used to convey important or urgent messages, and yellow helps do that.

Like many other much-used and much-loved products, post it notes have managed to diversify while still being as useful as ever. The average office stationery order will probably include standard, 3 inch yellow post it notes, but for those who want to use their post it notes to make a statement, or who just don t like the colour yellow, there are plenty of alternatives. Post it notes have even been used to make art.

It is difficult to imagine a world without post it notes now, and without doubt, 3 inch canary yellow post it notes are king.
